1,700 Greek Orthodox faithful, gathered at the Asbury Park, NJ boardwalk after services at the Paramount Theatre to commemorate Holy Cross Day celebration and the Blessing of the Waters on September 20, 2009. Holy Cross, celebrated on September 14th, commemorates Saint Helen's unearthing of the cross around 326 AD. The Blessing of the Waters and diving for the cross, symbolizes a reaffirmation of faith. Usually held throughout the world in January, the New Jersey dive coincides with Holy Cross Day.
